Acknowledging the difficulties faced in the last seven months, the governor expressed concern about the adverse effects of these economic changes on the state’s residents, creating a perception that little had been done to address their hardships.
Makinde’s address outlined the proactive measures taken by the government, such as the Sustainable Actions for Economic Recovery program, which provided immediate relief through food packages to the most vulnerable populations, including pensioners and civil servants. The administration also facilitated low-interest loans for traders, market participants, youth agropreneurs, and smallholder farmers. Additionally, it distributed grains and inputs to smallholder farmers, covered health insurance for pensioners and disadvantaged individuals, and introduced low-cost transportation through Omituntun Buses.
However, the governor acknowledged that these efforts might not be sufficient in the face of rising inflation rates. As the administration reached the halfway mark of its first year with the Omituntun 2.0 mandate, Makinde emphasized the relevance of the 2024 Budget of Economic Recovery, which aims to reinforce ongoing reforms for economic stability.
Governor Makinde appealed for continued support from the people of the state to achieve the administration’s goals in the new year. He outlined plans for completing road projects, initiating industrial hubs, attracting investors to the solid minerals sector, and developing the tourism sector. The governor also emphasized the importance of implementing the rule of law for the state’s progress, urging citizens to work together towards a safer and more secure Oyo State.
In conclusion, Governor Makinde expressed optimism that, with the support of the people and adherence to the economic blueprint, the administration would position Oyo State positively on the national map, making 2024 a year of positive transformation for all residents.
