According to the police spokesperson, ASP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the suspect, Aminu Abdullahi, 50, exploited his physical resemblance to renowned Islamic scholar Sheikh Dr. Abdallah Usman Gadon Kaya to deceive traders into handing over goods worth over N2 million.
The police report states that on November 22, 2024, around 5 p.m., Aminu visited a shop in Gwale Quarters, Kano, and introduced himself as a younger brother of Sheikh Dr. Abdallah Usman Gadon Kaya. He convinced the shopkeeper to provide two cartons of spaghetti valued at N35,000, claiming he would pay via bank transfer. The suspect showed a fake payment alert, and the shopkeeper allowed him to leave without verifying the transaction. However, the shopkeeper later discovered that no such payment had been made.
Upon receiving the complaint, Kano State Police Commissioner CP Salman Dogo Garba directed an investigation led by SP Abdulrahim Adamu, the Divisional Police Officer for Gwale Division. The team tracked down and arrested Aminu Abdullahi, who admitted during questioning that he was neither related to Sheikh Gadon Kaya nor had he made any legitimate transactions. Instead, he had used fake alerts to deceive multiple shopkeepers into giving him goods. Abdullahi confessed to defrauding at least 20 individuals and collecting goods worth over N2 million.
The case has been referred to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for further investigation. The police are asking anyone who recognizes the suspect or has been victimized by him to come forward with a report. Residents can contact the Kano Police Command Headquarters or the investigation team directly at 08166999948.
The Commissioner of Police urged the public to be vigilant and report any suspicious activities or fraudulent transactions. He also thanked the people of Kano for their continued support and cooperation in the fight against crime.
