A particularly distressing situation unfolded in Garam, a community in Tafa Local Government Area of Niger State, which shares a boundary with Abuja. Ongoing attacks in Garam have forced residents to flee their homes, seeking refuge in urban centers of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The attacks in Garam, which began on December 24, 2023, intensified on January 2, 2024, with bandits kidnapping an entire family.

The neighboring community of Kuduru in Bwari Area Council of the FCT also faced bandit incursions, with 18 individuals abducted on December 28. The violence further spread to Azu in Niger State on December 29, resulting in three fatalities and eight abductions.

Residents of Garam, gripped by fear, opted against observing the crossover service on December 31, 2023. Some churches held services between 5 pm and 8 pm, while others, equipped with sufficient security, conducted services between 10 pm and 4 am. Despite daytime patrols by soldiers, night-time attacks persisted.

The situation worsened on January 2, 2024, as bandits targeted an Igala man and kidnapped his entire family. Garam’s residents are now fleeing en masse, abandoning their homes due to the relentless attacks.

Zuma community in Bwari Area Council also faced an attack on January 2, resulting in the death of two security personnel and an undisclosed number of abductions. This marked the fifth attack since Christmas Eve, with over 55 individuals estimated to have been kidnapped.

Tragically, a woman in Garam, who had lost her husband to the bandits, succumbed to the grief and shock after receiving ransom demands for her two kidnapped children. The overall death toll and the number of kidnapped individuals continue to rise.

Efforts to seek responses from police authorities and security agencies regarding the attacks remain unanswered, raising concerns about the effectiveness of current security measures. Meanwhile, in Nasarawa State, gunmen attacked a shopping mall in Karu Local Government Area, killing four customers.

In Plateau, the Chief Imam of Jumma’at Mosque, Ndun village, and an Okada rider fell victim to bandit attacks, adding to the growing list of casualties in the region. The incidents highlight the urgent need for enhanced security measures to safeguard lives and property across affected states.
