Speaking at the event, Mr. Girish Sharma, Managing Director of Guinness Nigeria, reiterated the company’s commitment to youth empowerment through education. He noted that since the program’s launch in 2019, over 90 students have benefited from the scholarship, with more than N43 million in total financial support provided. The initiative aims to empower young Nigerians, particularly in STEM fields, to contribute to the nation’s growth and development.
“This scheme has become a beacon of hope for many young people in Nigeria, offering them the opportunity to excel in their academic pursuits. We are proud to support these talented individuals as they work towards a brighter future for themselves and the country,” Sharma said.
Highlighting the program’s impact, Sharma also noted the increased participation of female students, with over 55% of the scholarship recipients this year being women. The program has also expanded to include students from the Federal Nigerian Society for the Blind, marking a significant step toward greater inclusivity.
“We are particularly proud to have included students from the Nigerian Society for the Blind in this year’s selection process. Talent and potential know no bounds, and with the right support, every individual can achieve greatness,” he added.
Rotimi Odusola, Corporate Relations Director at Guinness Nigeria, expressed the company’s ongoing dedication to supporting Nigerian youth through education. He also announced plans to further expand the program, including increasing the number of recipients and the financial support each student receives. The scholarship amount was raised this year from N100,000 to N200,000 per beneficiary.
“We are committed to growing this initiative and increasing the number of students who can benefit from it. The scholarships are just one of many ways we are making a tangible difference in the lives of Nigerian youths,” Odusola said.
One of the new beneficiaries, John Sharon, a student at the University of Lagos, expressed her gratitude for the scholarship, especially given the rising costs of education. “This scholarship means so much to me. I am incredibly grateful to Guinness Nigeria for making this opportunity available. It will ease my financial burden and help me focus on my studies,” she said.
Mrs. Lasisi Salimot, the mother of another recipient, also shared her appreciation for the scholarship. As a widow, she said the financial support was crucial in helping her daughter continue her education. “I am deeply thankful for the increased scholarship amount. This support has been a lifeline for us,” she added.
The Guinness Nigeria Undergraduate Scholarship Scheme continues to be a cornerstone of the company’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) efforts. In 2024, the program received an overwhelming 18,517 applications, underscoring its popularity and the growing demand for educational support. Of the new recipients, eight are students from the Federal Nigerian Society for the Blind.
