Gunmen Attack Two Communities In Niger Republic, Leaving Twelve Dead

A municipal official in the Anzourou district confirmed the incident to journalists, stating that all the victims were male and hailed from the nearby villages of Doukou Saraou and Doukou Makani, located just half a mile apart.
The Tillaberi region is known for its instability and arid conditions, situated in the tri-border zone where southwestern Niger meets Mali and Burkina Faso. It has become a hotspot for insurgent activities linked to Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State group….CONTINUE READING
Despite the implementation of a state of emergency and the deployment of significant anti-jihadist forces, attacks in the region remain frequent. French soldiers are also aiding Nigerien forces in their efforts to counter the violence in Tillaberi.
The situation has resulted in a significant displacement of people, with nearly 11,000 individuals fleeing their homes in southwestern Niger this month alone, according to the United Nations. The Tillaberi region is now home to approximately 150,000 internally displaced people.
Notably, several villages in the Anzourou district have previously experienced attacks between May 2020 and August 2021, where dozens of people were killed by gunmen on motorcycles.
In addition to dealing with such violence in the border region, Niger is also facing ongoing jihadist threats in its southeast, which extend across the border from Nigeria.
