Speaking while signing the condolence register at the Federal Ministry of Works headquarters in Mabushi, Abuja, Umahi described Buhari’s support as a bold stand for justice, especially amid internal political tensions. He said Buhari’s firm directive to the party’s national chairman ensured that the will of the people prevailed.

“That moment was a turning point for me,” Umahi said. “When political saboteurs attempted to derail the process, Buhari stepped in and ordered that Nwifuru must be the governor.”

Reflecting on their close relationship, Umahi shared personal memories of the late president, including his fondness for Abakaliki rice — a gift he continued sending even after Buhari left office. “He once called to thank me, saying he wasn’t missing the rice even in retirement,” he recalled warmly.

He also praised Buhari’s work ethic, remembering a day the former president commissioned projects from morning until late evening in Ebonyi. “When I escorted him to his room, he said, ‘Governor, you know how to punish someone well,’ and I replied, ‘Sir, you signed up for it.’”

Umahi further revealed that although Ebonyi State had named its airport after Buhari, the former president humbly renamed it in honour of the late Senator Chuba Okadigbo before leaving office — a gesture Umahi described as a mark of true selflessness.

He also credited Buhari for supporting Ebonyi through initiatives such as the Paris Club refunds and the Anchor Borrowers Programme, which benefited several governors nationwide.

Concluding his tribute, Umahi commended President Bola Tinubu for honouring Buhari both in life and death. “Despite what critics say, even Buhari acknowledged that Tinubu played a vital role in helping him fulfill his presidential ambition,” he said.

Umahi described Buhari’s passing as a profound loss to the nation and prayed for strength for his family, President Tinubu, and the entire country.
