On April 24, 2024, a heartbreaking accident resulted in the untimely death of a four-year-old student at BrickHall Schools in Abuja’s Cadastral Zone B11, Kaura.
The child, Miguel Ovoke, arrived at school full of life and vitality, but tragically, he was discovered lifeless upon his parents’ return.
Miguel reportedly choked on a piece of meat during school feeding hours, leading to his demise despite efforts to rush him to the hospital. The medical report from Excel Specialist Hospital, Abuja, cited aspiration on meat while feeding as the cause of death.
This unfortunate incident underscores the importance of being equipped with knowledge on how to prevent and respond to choking emergencies, especially for those caring for children.
Choking, also known as foreign body airway obstruction, occurs when breathing is obstructed by a blockage in the respiratory tract. It can quickly lead to oxygen deprivation and, if not addressed promptly, death.
According to a licensed nurse, ORJI VIVIAN A (RN, RM, BNSc), signs of choking include cessation of chewing or swallowing, gasping for air, and bluish discoloration indicating oxygen deprivation.
For infants, she recommends the back blow maneuver, while for older children and adults, the Heimlich maneuver is advised. In all cases, emergency medical assistance should be sought if the person becomes unconscious.
