Algeria sealed a narrow 1–0 victory thanks to a dramatic late goal that finally broke DR Congo’s resilient defence. The encounter appeared headed for penalties until Adil Boulbina struck in the 119th minute to settle the contest.

Both sides struggled to create clear chances in a cagey first half, which ended scoreless as midfield battles dominated proceedings. Algeria suffered a setback early in the second half when Ismael Bennacer was forced off through injury, allowing DR Congo to grow in confidence.

As the match progressed, both coaches turned to their benches in search of inspiration. Algeria withdrew Riyad Mahrez around the 70th minute to introduce fresh energy, while DR Congo responded with substitutions that included Gael Kakuta and Edo Kayembe.

Despite increased urgency, neither team managed to find a breakthrough in regulation time. Extra time brought heightened intensity and a flurry of bookings as fatigue and frustration crept in, keeping referee Mohamed Maarouf Eid Mansour busy.

The decisive moment arrived just minutes from the end of extra time when Ramiz Zerrouki delivered a precise pass into the box, and Boulbina calmly finished to send Algeria through, triggering jubilant celebrations.

The victory sets up an eagerly anticipated quarter-final showdown with Nigeria’s Super Eagles, scheduled for Saturday, January 10, with kick-off slated for 5:00 p.m. (WAT).
