Heartbreaking Loss: Peter Obi Responds To Fatal Stampede In Lagos

Mr. Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has expressed deep concern about the prevailing economic challenges in the nation. His remarks came in response to the tragic incident involving the death of an All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain, Comfort Adebanjo, and six others. They lost their lives while attempting to purchase rice seized and put up for sale by the Nigerian Customs Service, a move aimed at mitigating the impact of economic hardship in the country.

Speaking at the first-anniversary event of the 2023 presidential election in Abuja on Sunday, Obi criticized the current government’s disproportionate allocation of funds. He highlighted the skewed priorities, pointing out that more money has been allocated to building car parks for politicians than supporting the operations of major teaching hospitals.

Obi emphasized that the recent hunger protests have brought Nigerians together, transcending ethnicity, language, region, faith, and location. He noted that the protests underscore the unity of Nigerians based on their shared living conditions, rather than artificial barriers erected by opportunistic politicians. He expressed sorrow over the stampede at the Nigerian Customs’ Zonal Office in Yaba, where lives were lost during the rush to purchase discounted 25kg rice.

The former presidential candidate lamented the heartbreaking reality that, despite the nation’s wealth, lives are being lost in the desperate quest for more affordable food amidst growing hunger and starvation. Obi criticized the excessive spending on what he termed “wasteful items,” citing the ordering of expensive renovations for already luxurious offices and residences by the new leaders in the face of national adversity.
