Terrorists had attacked the school on November 17, killing the Vice Principal, Malam Hassan Makuku, before abducting 26 students.
Two of the girls later escaped in the forest, leaving 24 still in captivity until their release last Sunday.
Speaking to Saturday Punch, a reliable source revealed that the military initially attempted a direct rescue operation, but the mission was unsuccessful, prompting authorities to explore negotiation channels with the abductors.
According to the insider, the girls were released at a location along the border between Gusau in Zamfara State and Kebbi State. They were held in a forest before security operatives retrieved them and transported them back to Kebbi.
The source said security forces had identified the forest hideout and maintained constant surveillance, deploying personnel and even a helicopter to restrict the bandits’ movements.
“The security agencies used various tactics to secure the girls’ release. They engaged the bandits in communication and applied professional methods that eventually convinced them to let the girls go,” the source explained.
When asked whether “communication” implied negotiation, the source confirmed, “Yes, there was negotiation. Initially, there was an exchange of gunfire, but the military later adopted a different approach, and the girls were eventually freed without harm. We are grateful to have them all back safely.”
A video later surfaced showing a bandit leader standing among the schoolgirls, claiming they regained their freedom through negotiated settlement.
“You have seen how the government could not rescue you,” he said. “Your release came through peaceful negotiations. Our leaders were contacted, and that was how you were freed.”
