Individuals who failed to secure ministerial positions are now actively lobbying for ambassadorial positions, with President Buhari’s associates, state governors, National Assembly members, APC support groups, and party chieftains leading the charge.

Sources reveal that the lobbying efforts focus on pushing the profiles of favored candidates and prioritizing individuals with longer career years ahead, sidelining those with a year or less until retirement.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar; Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs and International Relations, Ambassador Olusola Enikanolaiye; and Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, are reportedly under intense pressure to secure ambassadorial nominations.

The lobbying groups include past administrators, politicians, retired military personnel, unsuccessful governorship aspirants, and individuals who served as heads of agencies under President Buhari.

There is speculation about the ratio of career and non-career diplomats to be appointed, with a suggested split of 55% to 45%.

Regarding recalled ambassadors, the majority have reportedly returned to the country, and those yet to return have officially handed over to senior officers at their diplomatic posts while making travel arrangements back to Nigeria.
