Speculation has been growing that both politicians are considering a move to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) as early as next week, potentially aligning for a joint bid in the 2027 presidential election.
It will be recalled that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, alongside Obi and former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, has openly shown interest in the ADC’s 2027 presidential ticket.
Meanwhile, supporters of Obi under the “Obidient Movement” and followers of Kwankwaso within the Kwankwasiyya Movement are reportedly pushing for a joint Obi-Kwankwaso alliance ahead of the party’s primaries.
Despite this, recent developments within the ADC have fueled plans by both Obi and Kwankwaso to exit the party for the NDC, with talks said to be at an advanced stage.
Confirming the situation, an ADC leader told The Sun that party officials are actively working to stop the duo from leaving.
“There are ongoing internal efforts to resolve the issues. Significant work is being done, and we are hopeful that everything will be settled soon,” the source said.
However, the ADC National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, described the defection reports as speculative.
While acknowledging that party leaders have reached out to Obi and Kwankwaso, Abdullahi explained that the engagement is aimed at clarifying their positions rather than stopping them from leaving.
“At this stage, it remains speculation, as there has been no official confirmation. Our engagement is to understand their actual stance beyond the rumors. Ultimately, they have the right to make their own decision,” he said.
Similarly, the founding National Chairman of the ADC, Okey Nwosu, expressed confidence in the party’s leadership to manage the situation and resolve issues surrounding the presidential nomination process.
He added that the party is prepared to conduct a transparent primary election if a consensus cannot be reached.
“The current leadership is experienced and committed. If consensus fails, we will ensure a credible and transparent primary process,” he stated.
