Oluyede was appointed as Acting COAS by President Bola Tinubu following the ill-health of his predecessor, Taoreed Lagbaja, who later passed away.
According to Naija News, President Tinubu formally requested the House of Representatives to confirm Oluyede as the new substantive Chief of Army Staff. The president’s request was communicated through a letter read by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas during Tuesday’s plenary session.
The confirmation process began with a public session in which Oluyede presented his credentials and answered two initial questions. The committee then moved into a private session for further discussions regarding his appointment.
The Chairman of the House Committee on Defence highlighted that the hearing would go beyond just reviewing Oluyede’s qualifications. Instead, the committee’s focus would be on assessing his strategic vision for improving Nigeria’s security situation.
“The task before us today is not only to evaluate the nominee’s qualifications and vision as Chief of Army Staff, but also to establish a collaborative roadmap for addressing Nigeria’s security challenges,” the chairman stated. “As a partner in the pursuit of a secure and prosperous Nigeria, this House remains committed to legislative oversight and support for the Armed Forces.
