The House of Representatives has passed a bill today to reintroduce Nigeria’s former national anthem, “Nigeria we hail Thee.” The bill underwent rapid progression through all three readings in a matter of minutes.
During deliberations, House Leader Professor Julius Ihonvbere underscored the national anthem’s importance as a symbol of authority and unity, advocating for the revival of the old anthem, “Nigeria, We Hail Thee.”
Conversely, Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda expressed reservations about the bill, pointing out the colonial undertones associated with the old anthem and questioning its relevance amidst more pressing national issues. Despite this opposition, the bill garnered swift approval from the lawmakers.
