The House of Representatives ad hoc committee on power sector reforms and expenditures from 2006 to 2024 has established a seven-member sub-committee to conduct a forensic audit of gas supplied to electricity generation companies (GenCos) across Nigeria.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The move followed the adoption of a motion by committee member Harrison Nwadike, who raised concerns over the continued supply of gas to the Sapele power plant in Delta State, despite the plant failing to generate electricity for the past year.

Nwadike highlighted that the Sapele facility remained largely inactive while still receiving gas intended for power production.

Chairman of the ad hoc committee, Al-Mustapha Aliyu, noted growing public apprehension that Seplat Energy Company might not be supplying sufficient gas to the GenCos, a situation that could negatively impact electricity generation and national power availability.

Seplat Responds
In response, Seplat Energy’s Managing Director, Ibiada Itoto, dismissed the allegations, asserting the company’s commitment to the Federal Government’s power sector reform objectives. She emphasized that Seplat aims to support the growth and long-term sustainability of Nigeria’s power industry.

Seplat’s General Manager, Gas, Olubukola Fasoyin, further disclosed that the Sapele power plant owes the company approximately N20 billion for gas already supplied.

Despite this, Nwadike suggested that Seplat could be complicit in economic misconduct if gas intended for electricity generation was diverted or misused over the past year.

Aliyu expressed surprise and disappointment that a company of Seplat’s size reportedly lacked adequate internal controls to prevent misuse of gas supplied to power plants.

The sub-committee, chaired by Afam Victor Ogene, also includes Kafilat Ogbara, Salisu Magaji, Faud Kayode Laguda, and Harrison Nwadike, among others. The panel is tasked with conducting a thorough forensic audit to determine the actual utilization of gas supplied to power plants nationwide and to identify any irregularities.
