How Obasanjo And Fani-Kayode Faced Off Against Gaddafi’s Armed Convoy – Reno Omokri Reveals
A former Special Assistant to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, Reno Omokri, has shared details of how late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi was stopped twice from bringing arms into Nigeria during visits under the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Omokri recounted the incidents on his X handle while reacting to an alleged protocol breach by Burkinabe President, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, who reportedly carried a weapon during a meeting with Ghanaian President John Mahama.
According to Omokri, Nigerian authorities took decisive action both times Gaddafi attempted to bring armed bodyguards and weapons into the country.
The first incident occurred during the African Heads of Government Summit on Roll Back Malaria on Tuesday, April 25, 2000. Gaddafi’s female bodyguards attempted to enter the International Conference Center in Abuja with weapons but were stopped by Obasanjo’s Chief Security Officer. They were disarmed at gunpoint before being allowed inside with Colonel Gaddafi to join other African leaders, Omokri explained.
The second, more dramatic incident took place during the Africa-South America Summit in November 2006. Gaddafi arrived with five large planes, unloading approximately 50 cars filled with weapons. Nigerian officials at Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport stopped Gaddafi and his over 200 guards, ensuring the weapons were placed back onto the planes before they could proceed.
Omokri highlighted these incidents to underscore Nigeria’s authority and influence in the region, contrasting it with Ghana. He emphasized that no foreign leader would be allowed to breach protocol in Nigeria as was alleged in Ghana.
“Colonel Gaddafi was incensed. He said since he couldn’t leave the airport with his cars filled with weapons, he would walk into Abuja,” Omokri added.
