Lamido made the remarks on Saturday while hosting PDP governorship candidates from Gombe, Bauchi, Kano, Yobe and Jigawa states at his residence in Bamaina, Jigawa State.
The former governor also criticised former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy Isa Ali Pantami over comments he said the Islamic scholar made in the past, allegedly describing the PDP as an “infidel party.”
Looking back on the PDP’s time in government, Lamido said the party faced sustained criticism from political opponents as well as some religious leaders. Despite the attacks, he said he chose to remain with the party because it gave him the opportunity to serve Nigeria as Minister of Foreign Affairs and later as a two-term governor of Jigawa State.
Lamido further revealed that following the 2015 general elections, prominent APC leaders—including former President Muhammadu Buhari, President Bola Tinubu and former Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola—visited him in Dutse in an attempt to convince him to join the ruling party.
According to him, he declined the invitation, insisting he could not leave the political platform that helped shape his career.
“I told them I could not abandon the party that made me who I am. Instead, I challenged them to come and join the PDP,” he said.
Lamido also alleged that Pantami, while serving as Chief Imam of the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Jumu’ah Mosque, preached against the PDP and referred to it as an “infidel party” during his sermons.
He further claimed that Pantami later joined the PDP after failing to secure the APC governorship ticket in Gombe State, a development he said sparked widespread public discussion.
