Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, voiced his distress over the dreadful condition of the Lagos-Ota-Abeokuta expressway and the harrowing experiences daily commuters face.

While attending the 2023 Yewa Cultural Festival in Ilaro, Ogun State, he described how he was trapped in a two-hour long traffic snarl. Akpabio made these comments at the festival’s grand finale on October 14, 2023, in Yewa South Local Government Area. He emphasized that he took the route intentionally to firsthand witness and understand the anguish motorists endure daily.

Recounting his ordeal, Akpabio stated, “I decided to pass through the Lagos-Abeokuta, Papalanto-Ilaro road to experience the pain you people are facing. I spent about two hours in traffic because two tankers fell on the road. I genuinely empathize with the daily commuters.”

Akpabio, accompanied by 70 other senators, committed the Senate’s support to aid the Ogun State Government in refurbishing this road and other federal roads in dire need of repair in the state. He highlighted Yewaland’s economic significance, home to a significant number of industries, making the road’s repair paramount.

Taking a decisive stand, Akpabio proclaimed, “I assure you that we will be working with our brother, Dapo Abiodun. From today, I prophesy that your roads are done.”

He also utilized the platform to advise Yewaland’s youths to shun drugs and criminal activities, guaranteeing them a promising future if they tread the right path.

On a similar note, Governor Abiodun made an earnest plea to the Senate to encourage the Federal Government to hand over the Lagos-Ota-Abeokuta Road’s reconstruction project to the state, underlining the road’s economic importance. He also unveiled plans about the reconstruction of the Abeokuta-Olorunda-Imeko and the Abeokuta-Iborro-Ilaro roads.

Emphasizing the road’s importance, Governor Abiodun said, “This road is very key to our socio-economic development. Mr. Senate President, please help us with the Federal Government to transfer this road to us.”

The discourse provides a clear indication of the leadership’s dedication to improving infrastructural conditions and ensuring economic prosperity.
