In his newly launched autobiography, A Journey in Service, Babangida condemned their leadership approach, accusing them of alienating the military from civilians and fostering an atmosphere of rigid authoritarianism.

He noted that Buhari and Idiagbon adopted a self-righteous stance, which strained civil-military relations and led to widespread fear and repression.

Human Rights Violations Under Buhari’s Rule

IBB further recounted that fundamental rights and freedoms were routinely suppressed under Buhari’s military regime.

He wrote:

“My predecessor, Major General Muhammadu Buhari, and his deputy, Brigadier Tunde Idiagbon, distanced themselves from the armed forces by personalizing what was initially a collective leadership.

They projected a ‘holier than thou’ attitude, turning civilians against the military.

Fundamental rights were routinely violated, and instead of inspiring hope, we ruled the nation through draconian decrees.

A government meant to embody the collective will of the armed forces became a personal autocracy of a rigid few.”
