According to Ammarachi Anyanwu, the Chief Operating Officer of Derda Promotions, Kabaka passed away on Thursday. In a heartfelt statement released on Friday, Derda Promotions expressed deep sorrow over the loss of Kabaka, describing him as an iconic figure who revolutionized the highlife music genre. Kabaka, known for his exceptional songwriting and guitar skills, delighted fans for decades with his infectious highlife tunes.
His illustrious career began with the co-founding of The Oriental Brothers International Band in 1973, a group celebrated for its socially conscious lyrics and authentic sound. In 1976, Kabaka ventured into a solo career, forming The Kabaka International Guitar Band. Over the years, he released fourteen albums and produced hits like ‘Mangala Special’, showcasing his versatility by experimenting with Ezebongo rhythms.
Kabaka’s musical legacy continued to flourish, and in September 2023, he made a triumphant return with the album ‘The Return of Kabaka’, which garnered over a million streams worldwide and earned a spot among the top 100 albums. His passion for music was contagious, and his dedication to his craft served as an inspiration to all who knew him.
