Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki has revealed that salaries can’t be paid after June if Federal Government continue to pay for Fuel Subsidy.

The fuel subsidy in Nigeria refers to the government’s policy of subsidizing the price of petroleum products, particularly gasoline, for Nigerian consumers. In recent years, there have been calls for the Nigerian government to remove the fuel subsidy, as it is seen as unsustainable and inefficient. Proponents of removing the subsidy argue that it would free up resources that could be used for other development projects, and would help to reduce corruption and inefficiency in the country’s fuel distribution system. However, opponents argue that removing the subsidy would lead to a significant increase in fuel prices, which would hurt Nigeria’s already struggling economy and would disproportionately affect the country’s poor.

The Nigerian government has made several attempts to reform the fuel subsidy system, including partial removals of the subsidy and efforts to increase transparency and efficiency in the distribution system. However, the issue remains controversial, and there is no clear consensus on the best way forward for Nigeria’s fuel subsidy policy.

Although the incoming Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu from the campaign season had made known to his supporters that he is going to remove the subsidy on fuel despite protests.

While addressing Labour workers, the two-tenure seating Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki has urged the incoming administration to either remove fuel subsidy or print more money or else it will be impossible to pay salaries starting from June this year. CONTINUE READING

In his words, he said:

“Nigeria is in trouble, the economy of our country is in a terrible state, it will be a miracle for the federal government and state government to pay salary beyond June this year without resorting to massively printing money or removing fuel subsidy.”

“Either of these decisions will bring more hardship and pain to us as a people, particularly to you the workers. Therefore we must all make sure that the burden and pain of this measure which must be taken are not burned by workers alone.”
