This declaration followed the group’s recent election in Ikom, Central Cross River State, where Chief Emeka Egwuonwu was elected as the new President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo in the state, to serve a four-year term.
In his acceptance speech, Egwuonwu described his emergence as a turning point, signaling the end of passive political engagement by Igbos both in Cross River and across the country.
“We are stepping up. From now on, beginning with the 2027 general elections, Igbos will be fully engaged in the political process,” he said.
Egwuonwu emphasized that this renewed political involvement would be a strategic move to ensure that the Igbo people benefit more from good governance. He pledged to lead with courage and commitment, focusing on the collective interest of his people.
“It’s no longer business as usual. I will steer the affairs of Ohanaeze Ndigbo in Cross River with total dedication. We’ll collaborate with the state government and work towards meaningful progress for the Igbo community locally and globally,” he added.
Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State congratulated Egwuonwu on his victory, describing the election process as peaceful and credible. Represented by his Special Adviser on Non-Indigene Affairs, Mazi Okey Maduekwe, the governor assured of continued support for Egwuonwu’s efforts to unify and uplift the group.
Governor Otu further highlighted the peaceful coexistence and thriving businesses of the Igbo people in Cross River, noting their mutual support for his administration.
