Okunade, a high-ranking officer in the Internal Audit Department of CBN, was fatally shot in the head by suspected assassins on Tuesday as he returned from work. The incident occurred inside Wisdom Supermarket, also known as Abdullahi Supermarket, in the Koroduma Community of Nasarawa State, near Abuja, where he had gone to purchase bread and other items for his family.

While local authorities in Nasarawa State initiated the investigation, the Inspector General of Police took over following a request from CBN management. Additionally, there are indications that CBN plans to move Okunade’s body from Mararaba Medical Center to Asokoro General Hospital in Abuja for security reasons.

Upon acceding to CBN’s request, the Inspector General of Police promptly deployed elite detectives from the Force Headquarters in Abuja to the crime scene. These detectives interrogated the supermarket manager, who narrowly escaped harm. The CCTV footage was reviewed to gather crucial information for identifying and locating the perpetrators.

Three unidentified individuals were also killed alongside the CBN staff. Although one of them is reportedly a Federal High Court staff in Abuja, his name is withheld for security reasons.

Concerns were raised by CBN regarding the peculiar circumstances of the killing. Notably, Okunade’s Toyota Venza car, parked outside the supermarket, was left untouched by the assailants. The gunmen, after shooting Okunade, conducted a search before swiftly departing, confirming their specific target.

Apart from his role at CBN, Okunade, originally from Iree town near Osogbo in Osun State, served as the choirmaster at the Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) in Koroduma Community, also known as One Man Village.

As of the latest report, the supermarket remains sealed to preserve potential evidence. The Commissioner of Police in Nasarawa State, Mr. Umar Shehu Nadada, and his deputy overseeing the criminal investigation department are collaborating with detectives from Abuja to conduct a thorough investigation aimed at apprehending the culprits.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Nasarawa State Police Command, DSP Ranham Nansel, confirmed the incident, stating that on January 2, 2024, around 8:45 pm, a group of hoodlums attacked Wisdom Supermarket in Adeyi, Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa state, resulting in the tragic killing of four customers.
