On August 7, Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun had denied that live bullets were employed, asserting, “The police and military, along with other security agencies, did not use excessive force. According to our records, there were no shootings by the police, and we did not deploy live ammunition. We have only used teargas, not water cannons or rubber bullets.”

Egbetokun dismissed claims of excessive force as “fake news,” emphasizing that the police did not fully deploy their resources, even when protests turned violent.

However, the following day, the Nigerian Army revealed that a soldier had indeed opened fire on a protester, resulting in the death of a 16-year-old boy, Ismail Mohammed, on August 6, 2024. Army spokesperson Onyema Nwachukwu explained that the troops were called to disperse a large crowd in Samaru who were burning tyres and throwing stones at security personnel.

When the protesters attempted to attack the troops, a soldier fired a warning shot that inadvertently hit and killed Ismail Mohammed. The soldier involved has been arrested and is under investigation.
