In a statement issued from Abuja on Sunday, the regional bloc described the incident as a serious and unacceptable attack on the democratic will of the Beninese people.
ECOWAS denounced the unconstitutional action and called for full adherence to the country’s Constitution. The Commission also praised the government and the Republican Army for their efforts in restoring order.
The bloc warned that the leaders of the attempted coup, both individually and collectively, would be held accountable for any loss of life or property resulting from their actions.
ECOWAS affirmed its full support for the government and citizens of Benin, including the potential deployment of the regional standby force to protect the Constitution and the country’s territorial integrity.
Earlier reports by Naija News indicated that a small group of military personnel claimed to have ousted President Patrice Talon on Sunday. Soldiers identifying themselves as the “Military Committee for Refoundation” (CMR) appeared on state television, declaring that “Mr Patrice Talon is removed from office as president of the republic.” Talon is scheduled to leave office in April next year, completing 10 years in power.
