INEC has also warned that such offences could undermine the fairness of the upcoming off-cycle Edo State Governorship Election.

During a one-day seminar with youth groups in Edo State, Rita Amadi, Head of INEC’s Legal Department in Edo State, emphasized the significance of addressing electoral offences. Represented by Oba Agbonifo from the Benin office, Amadi’s presentation, titled ‘Electoral Offences and Penalties,’ aimed to educate young voters about electoral laws and their penalties.

Amadi highlighted the difficulties in prosecuting electoral offences due to inefficiencies in criminal investigations nationwide. She stressed that effective reduction of these offences requires prompt arrest, prosecution, and punishment of offenders to address the current culture of impunity.

“Electoral offences, whether committed by individuals or groups, should be prosecuted according to existing laws. With the youth constituting a significant portion of the electorate, it’s crucial for them to fully understand these offences,” Amadi stated.

She also noted that while INEC has the mandate to prosecute electoral offences under the Electoral Act, it lacks the authority and resources for arrests and in-depth investigations. Amadi called on political stakeholders to assist INEC by educating their supporters and discouraging the “do or die” mentality that often taints the election process.
