The Peoples Democratic Party has alleged that public trust in the Independent National Electoral Commission has fallen to an unprecedented level, claiming the electoral body is no longer perceived as an independent and impartial umpire.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

In a statement posted on its verified account on Tuesday, the opposition party accused the commission, under the leadership of Professor Joash Amupitan, of operating in a manner that favours the ruling All Progressives Congress.

According to the PDP, INEC’s handling of court judgments, its alleged selective compliance with judicial decisions and concerns surrounding the transparency of its electronic transmission system have contributed to growing public distrust.

The party argued that a credible electoral body is essential to sustaining democracy, particularly during periods of economic hardship, as citizens must believe they can effect political change through the ballot box.

It further claimed that confidence in the commission has steadily eroded, alleging that INEC now appears to be serving the interests of the ruling party rather than acting as an independent institution.

Meanwhile, INEC has continued preparations for the 2027 general elections by issuing access codes to nine registered political parties, enabling them to upload the names of their candidates through the commission’s nomination portal.

The parties granted access reportedly include the APC, PDP, African Democratic Congress, Nigeria Democratic Congress and several others.

The uploaded candidates will contest the presidential, governorship, Senate and House of Representatives elections, with the exception of governorship contests in Kogi and Osun states, which are conducted on an off-cycle basis.

An INEC official, who spoke anonymously, also dismissed reports suggesting that the NDC had been denied access to the commission’s candidate nomination portal, insisting that all eligible registered political parties were being treated fairly in accordance with the electoral timetable.
