Tinubu, who flew in from Los Angeles, United States, was welcomed at the Brasília Air Base by senior Brazilian government officials, including Ambassador Carlos Sérgio Sobral Duarte, Secretary for Africa and the Middle East, and Brazil’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Carlos José Areias Moreno Garcete. Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Ojukwu, was also present at the reception.
Other ministers, heads of government agencies, and private sector representatives later received the President at his hotel, ahead of a series of bilateral engagements and MoU signings.
An official welcoming ceremony with full military honours will take place at the Planalto Palace. There, President Tinubu will hold a private meeting with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, followed by expanded bilateral talks involving senior officials from both countries. The two leaders will witness the signing of several Memoranda of Understanding and address a joint press conference.
As part of his schedule, Tinubu will also meet with the President of the Brazilian Senate, the President of the Chamber of Deputies, and the President of the Supreme Federal Court. Additionally, he will participate in the Nigeria-Brazil Business Forum.
Nigeria and Brazil have shared close diplomatic ties since the early 1960s. Nigeria established its embassy in Brazil in October 1966, while Brazil was the only Latin American country to attend Nigeria’s independence celebrations in 1960.
Since Tinubu’s inauguration on May 29, 2023, bilateral relations have deepened through high-level engagements. Notably, Tinubu led Nigeria’s delegation to the BRICS Leaders’ Summit in Rio de Janeiro in July 2025 and, at President Lula’s invitation, attended the G20 Summit in November 2024.
The partnership between both nations has been reinforced through the Mechanism for Strategic Dialogue, co-chaired by the Vice Presidents of both countries. Its second session was held in Abuja in June 2025, leading to the signing of seven MoUs on defence, energy, tourism, livestock development, counternarcotics, and more.
Brazil is also a vital partner in Nigeria’s food security drive. A $2.5 billion JBS investment signed at the 2024 G20 Summit is expected to boost local food production and create job opportunities. Additionally, the $1.1 billion Green Imperative Programme (GIP), launched in 2019, remains underway, with plans to supply 10,000 tractors and 50,000 farm equipment units for assembly in Nigeria.
