The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) on Tuesday brought former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai before the Federal High Court in Kaduna over allegations involving inflated severance payments and suspicious foreign currency transactions.

El-Rufai was arraigned alongside his co-defendant, Joel Adoga, on a 10-count charge bordering on alleged breaches of Nigeria’s anti-money laundering laws.

According to the ICPC, the case involves claims of exaggerated severance payments totalling about ₦579.7 million, as well as questionable dollar deposits amounting to $817,900 allegedly linked to the former governor. The commission accused both defendants of engaging in financial dealings that violate existing anti-corruption and money laundering regulations.

When the charges were read, El-Rufai and Adoga both pleaded not guilty. The court proceedings were conducted under tight security.

Following their pleas, the presiding judge, Justice Ridwan Aikawa, ordered that both men be remanded in ICPC custody pending further hearings.

Before the arraignment, El-Rufai had reportedly spent over a month in the commission’s custody.
