Speaking on Thursday, the Ondo South Senator clarified that Akpoti-Uduaghan was neither a member of the IPU nor an official representative of Nigeria at the forum, making her petition invalid.
During a female session at the United Nations’ IPU forum, Akpoti-Uduaghan accused the Senate and Akpabio of suspending her after she raised allegations of sexual harassment against the Senate President.
Ibrahim, a former interim president of the IPU, explained that only member states can file petitions against other member states, ruling out the possibility of individuals submitting complaints.
“A petition can only be filed by one member state against another. This means the IPU cannot entertain petitions from individuals who are not recognized members. While Nigeria is a member, the suspended Senator is not,” Ibrahim stated.
He further emphasized that as Chairman of the Interparliamentary Committee, he did not authorize Akpoti-Uduaghan to represent Nigeria at the IPU and therefore her complaint holds no weight within the union.
