JAMB Reveals Nigerian Universities Admitting 10-Year-Olds
During a policy meeting held by JAMB in Abuja, Professor Oloyede revealed that certain universities have been admitting students as young as 10 years old, disregarding the legal age limit of 18……. CONTINUE READING
He cited examples of universities like UNILAG and OAU, which have set a minimum age requirement of 16 years for admission.
Additionally, Oloyede recounted an incident involving a candidate who applied for a master’s degree in Germany, only to be questioned about graduating from a Nigerian university at the age of 15.
“While the legal age is 18, UNILAG, OAU require applicants to be at least 16. Some institutions admit students as young as 10. For instance, there was a case where a candidate applied for a master’s degree in Germany and applied for the Erasmus Scholarship, an EU program,” Oloyede disclosed.
“The EU was surprised to find that the candidate was born in 2007 and started university at the age of 12, prompting them to seek verification from Nigeria,” he continued.
“The implication of such admissions is significant. In the coming years, Nigerian university graduates may face increased scrutiny and potential challenges,” Oloyede warned.
“We discovered that JAMB did not admit the candidate due to her underage status, but the university proceeded with her registration. I was left embarrassed when asked to respond to the EU’s inquiries,” he admitted.
“The vice-chancellor confirmed the student attended the university but stated they were not in office at the time,” Oloyede added.
