In a statement posted on her Twitter handle, Umar-Farouk refuted any business dealings with Okwete and disassociated herself from him. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is reportedly investigating the former minister in connection with Okwete.
Umar-Farouk maintained her pride in her actions during her tenure as minister and dismissed the reports linking her to the alleged investigation. She emphasized that Okwete had no affiliation with her, neither as a worker nor a representative.
Resisting engagement in any media trial, Umar-Farouk disclosed that she had contacted her legal team to explore options for seeking redress against what she termed a malicious attack on her character.
Expressing her commitment to defending her actions, stewardship, and programs during her tenure, the former minister highlighted her service to the country as a point of pride. She was appointed as the pioneer Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development by former President Muhammadu Buhari in July 2019, making her the youngest cabinet member at the time.
It is worth noting that the EFCC recently uncovered an alleged sum of N37,170,855,753.44 laundered in the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs during Umar-Farouk’s term. The ministry oversees eight agencies, including the National Social Investment Office and the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants, and Internationally Displaced Persons.
