The political crisis in Rivers State escalated on December 11, 2023, when 27 members of the state House of Assembly defected from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC). President Tinubu intervened, leading to a peace agreement signed by Fubara and Wike on December 18. However, the PDP, unhappy with the development, officially joined a lawsuit seeking to declare vacant the seats of the defecting lawmakers.

Fubara, addressing the public on Christmas Day, assured citizens that the peace agreement would be implemented without compromising the interests of the state’s residents. He acknowledged the mixed reactions to the agreement but stressed that it was not a “death sentence.” The governor also confirmed the release of allowances to the lawmakers and the withdrawal of their ‘purported’ impeachment.

Expressing gratitude for President Tinubu’s intervention, Fubara pledged to prioritize the collective interest of the state and its people. He outlined upcoming projects and programs slated for 2024, emphasizing the commitment to stability and progress.

However, the PDP National Working Committee strongly opposed Fubara’s intention to implement the peace deal, labeling it unconstitutional. Party leaders highlighted the constitutional nature of the issue, asserting that the fate of the defected lawmakers’ seats should be determined through legal channels, not arbitrary decisions.

Party members cautioned that implementing the peace pact against the party’s stance could lead to political consequences for Governor Fubara. They emphasized the need for adherence to constitutional principles and urged stakeholders to prioritize genuine reconciliation for the benefit of Rivers State.
