Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, has strongly criticized the Federal government’s proposal to provide N8,000 cash transfer to 12 million impoverished Nigerians as a palliative measure following the removal of fuel subsidy.

He asserted that approximately 70 to 75 percent of the rural population in the North West region were entirely financially excluded, lacking even a basic bank account.

This, he argued, raises questions about the effectiveness of cash transfer to individuals who may not have access to the financial system.

Furthermore, the governor highlighted the inadequacies of the existing social register, stating that it had not been updated properly.

He cited a case study of the North West region, where about 70 percent of the rural population was not captured in the 2019 register due to security challenges.

Governor Sani defended the position of the National Executive Council (NEC), claiming that the social register lacked credibility in its current state.

Governor Uba Sani emphasized that before implementing any cash transfer program, the government must prioritize addressing financial exclusion, especially in the North West region, by bringing more individuals into the formal financial system.
