Kane Vs Mbappé: 2026 Ballon d’Or Decided by Fewer Than 41 Points

Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane edged Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé to win the 2026 Ballon d’Or by a remarkably narrow margin, according to France Football editor Vincent Garcia.

Garcia revealed that the difference between the two players was fewer than the 41 points that separated Rodri and Vinícius Júnior in the 2024 edition of the prestigious individual award.

The disclosure came after Kane was announced as the winner at a ceremony held at the London Palladium on Monday evening, October 26. The complete voting figures are expected to be released on Saturday, providing further details about the closely contested race.

Speaking to French newspaper L’Équipe, Garcia explained that Mbappé had maintained the lead for much of the voting period before Kane staged a late comeback to secure the award.

According to Bush Radio Academy, the editor described the contest as exceptionally tight, noting that the final outcome was determined by a very small number of points.

“The points gap between Kane and Mbappé was smaller than the gap between Rodri and Vinícius Júnior in 2024, which was 41 points, and that was already a very narrow margin at the time,” Garcia said.

He added that although Mbappé had led the race for a considerable period, Kane’s late surge ultimately secured him the prestigious honour.

The exact number of points separating the two players remains unknown pending the publication of the full voting results on Saturday.

Kane’s victory followed an outstanding campaign in which he scored 73 goals in 65 appearances for Bayern Munich and the England national team. His contributions also helped Bayern secure the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal titles.

The England captain further strengthened his credentials with six goals at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where England finished third. His Ballon d’Or triumph marks a significant milestone in his career, making him the first Englishman to win the award since Michael Owen claimed it in 2001.

Meanwhile, Mbappé finished second, recording his highest-ever position in the Ballon d’Or rankings, while Barcelona youngster Lamine Yamal secured third place.

Despite missing out on the award, Mbappé enjoyed an impressive individual campaign, finishing as La Liga’s leading scorer with 25 goals and the Champions League’s top scorer with 15. He also topped the scoring charts at the World Cup with 10 goals.

The narrow outcome has added further intrigue to the 2026 Ballon d’Or race, with the forthcoming release of the complete voting figures expected to reveal just how close Mbappé came to overtaking Kane for football’s most prestigious individual prize.
