The State’s response was disclosed by Haruna Dederi, the State Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General, who characterized the ruling as “unfounded.” He also affirmed that the government possesses all the necessary documentation to file an appeal.
Dederi stated, “We are set to contest this verdict at the Court of Appeal. Furthermore, the land use decree clearly defines the governor’s authority over land within the state, particularly in urban areas.”
The Federal High Court’s decision, delivered by Justice Samuel Amobeda on Friday, deemed the Kano State Government’s demolition of the shops without adhering to proper procedures as “barbaric and unconstitutional.” The court ordered the government to compensate the traders with N30 billion.
The shopping complexes near Kano Eid Ground were demolished by the administration led by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf in June of the current year, classifying the structures as illegal. According to the government, this action was in fulfillment of its campaign pledges to the residents of Kano State.
