The students, attending Government Girls Community Secondary School in Maga, were kidnapped on November 17, 2025.
The Commissioner for Information and Culture, Ahmed Yakubu, described the abduction as one that “sent shockwaves throughout Nigeria and beyond,” noting that public anxiety was fueled by memories of previous prolonged rescue operations.
Yakubu recounted Governor Idris’ immediate and courageous response, describing it as decisive and urgent.
“The November 17 abduction revived haunting memories of the Borno State school kidnapping, where the fate of the girls lingered for years,” Yakubu said during an official briefing.
Upon learning of the abduction, Governor Idris cancelled a major engagement in Abuja and immediately traveled to Maga to meet with the families. Despite intense pressure, he maintained composure, coordinated communications across institutions and communities, and personally reached out to stakeholders nationwide. He urged agencies to act promptly and repeatedly stressed that the girls must be returned safely without any ransom.
The state government raised concerns over the withdrawal of troops previously stationed at the school around 3:00 a.m., noting that the attackers struck roughly 45 minutes later, tragically claiming two lives.
Yakubu confirmed that all 24 schoolgirls were freed unharmed eight days later, attributing the successful rescue to “decisive leadership, courage, and swift action.”
He addressed fears about abuse, pregnancies, and forced marriages seen in prior incidents, emphasizing that the girls were “returned safely, physically and unharmed,” with no ransom paid, countering earlier online speculation.
The Commissioner highlighted the importance of security coordination, noting the role of the multinational task force and Nigerian personnel already deployed in affected areas. He also acknowledged the support of President Bola Tinubu, the military, and religious leaders, who contributed both directly and indirectly.
The state government expressed gratitude for the safe return of the Maga girls and confirmed that their education would continue uninterrupted.
