The personnel underwent a rigorous nine-week training exercise in Kalgo Local Government Area, where they were drilled in early warning intelligence, patrol and ambush operations, as well as the handling of AK-47 rifles.
The training was jointly overseen by the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Police Force and the military, underscoring a collaborative approach to security.
At the graduation ceremony on Saturday, Deputy Governor Umar Tafida called on host communities and traditional leaders to work closely with the forest guards, stressing that community cooperation is crucial in the fight against banditry and forest-based crimes.
Speaking on behalf of the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, Commissioner of Police Umar Hadejia disclosed that the guards would be deployed immediately to high-risk forest corridors and ungoverned spaces.
Kebbi is among the seven states selected for the pilot phase of the National Forest Guard programme, with Arewa, Augie, Dandi and Danko-Wasagu Local Government Areas listed for the first round of deployment.
Tafida explained that the new guards would support existing security agencies and deny criminals the use of forest reserves as hideouts or operational zones.
As the rollout begins, residents have expressed optimism that the increased security presence will disrupt bandit activities and bring lasting relief to rural communities plagued by insecurity.
