Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Keyamo clarified that the issues stemmed from security operatives outside the Aviation Ministry’s purview, prompting him to approach the NSA for action. He emphasized that although these incidents are not directly related to the Ministry of Aviation, he is deeply concerned about the mistreatment of passengers.

“We have filed complaints with the National Security Adviser because we are concerned about the harassment of Nigerians. It’s important to note that these actions are not coming from the aviation sector, nor from me personally. People often tag me when they encounter requests for bribes, but those involved are from other agencies,” Keyamo stated. “We had to escalate the matter to the NSA, who is already taking significant steps in addressing these issues.”

The Minister also revealed that the NSA has taken proactive measures by procuring 1,000 body cameras for security personnel stationed at airports. These cameras are intended to enhance monitoring and transparency in the operations of security agencies. “The training for this initiative is almost complete. The body cameras will be worn by all security personnel, and there will be a command center monitoring the footage. This will help ensure accountability,” Keyamo explained.

While acknowledging the need for effective security, Keyamo disagreed with suggestions to remove many security agencies from the airports. He argued that their presence is essential for maintaining safety, particularly in tackling issues such as drug trafficking, as seen with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) arrests.

“These agencies should remain at the airports, but their activities should be carefully monitored,” Keyamo said. “They should have designated areas for operations, and only when necessary, should they pull a person aside for further checks in a restricted zone. What Nigerians don’t want is constant random checks from agencies like the NDLEA or DSS. We need a more streamlined, respectful approach to ensure the safety and dignity of travelers.”

Keyamo reiterated that his Ministry is committed to addressing the concerns of Nigerians and improving the experience at Nigerian airports.
