This information was revealed by the State’s Commissioner of Police, Mr. Bethrand Onuoha, in an official statement disclosed by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP William Ovye Aya, and obtained by DAILY POST on Sunday.

According to the statement, the prompt response was initiated due to the increasing incidents of kidnapping along the Ajaokuta-Adogo-Okene road. On the mentioned date, students and staff of Comprehensive High School, Ajaokuta, along with other travelers, fell victim to these criminal activities.

In immediate response to the crisis, the Area Commander Ajaokuta, ACP Ayodele Ola Arogbo, led a joint operation involving the police, military, and local vigilantes. During the search in the bush, three individuals, including one student, were successfully rescued.

On the subsequent day, December 30, 2023, the Commissioner of Police deployed an additional tactical squad, the Quick Response Unit, led by SP Sule Musa, Divisional Police Officer, Ajaokuta Division, to reinforce the ongoing efforts. The combined team continued the search in the bush, resulting in the successful rescue of the remaining victims.

The statement noted that, during a confrontation with the criminals who opened fire from their hideout, the superior firepower of the security team compelled the hoodlums to retreat, leaving their victims behind. In total, 21 individuals, including 11 students and three teachers, were rescued unharmed. Efforts are currently underway to apprehend the fleeing suspects responsible for the heinous act.

Commending the valiant efforts of the security team, the Commissioner of Police assured the public of sustained efforts to combat criminal elements. Meanwhile, a group named Concerned Youths in Ajaokuta expressed gratitude to Ajaokuta Area Commander, ACP Ayodele Ola Arogbo, and other security agencies for their swift action and successful rescue operation in the Local Government. The group highlighted that since ACP Arogbo’s deployment to Ajaokuta, the area has become inhospitable for criminal activities.
