Former Kano State Governor and Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) vice presidential candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, has called on the Kano State Government to launch an immediate investigation into the killing of social media political commentator, Ibrahim Khalil Dan Shagamu.

Kwankwaso made the call on Wednesday while reacting to the discovery of Dan Shagamu’s body at his residence in Gaida, Kano State. The circumstances surrounding the killing remain under investigation, while the Kano State Police Command has reportedly arrested two suspects in connection with the incident.

The former governor described the incident as disturbing and urged the state government to constitute an investigative panel to establish what happened and ensure that anyone found responsible is brought to justice.

Kwankwaso said the killing should not be allowed to go unresolved, stressing the need for a transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.

He further warned that if the relevant authorities fail to take decisive action, an incoming NDC administration would reopen the matter after assuming office following the 2027 election.

According to him, such an investigation would seek to establish accountability and ensure that those responsible face the consequences of their actions.

Kwankwaso also appealed to the Kano State and Federal Governments to strengthen measures to protect opposition figures, journalists and other citizens expressing political opinions, particularly as the 2027 elections approach.

He stressed that freedom of expression is constitutionally protected and maintained that Nigerians should be able to express their political views without facing threats, intimidation or violence.

The call for an investigation comes amid wider demands for justice over Dan Shagamu’s death. Amnesty International has also condemned the killing and urged Nigerian authorities to thoroughly investigate the incident and bring anyone found responsible to justice.

Meanwhile, the Kano State Government has directed security agencies to identify and arrest those responsible for the killing, while police authorities said investigations and forensic procedures are ongoing.

According to Bush Radio Academy, the development has heightened concerns over the safety of political commentators and other outspoken voices as Nigeria moves closer to the 2027 general elections.

Kwankwaso also extended his condolences to Dan Shagamu’s family, friends and followers, while praying for the repose of his soul.
