Kwara Court Rules In Favor Of EFCC, Convicting Six FraudstersThe Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Ilorin branch has successfully secured convictions against six individuals for internet fraud. According to a statement from EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, the convicts include Idris Muhammed, Ismail Mustapha, Oyekola Odunayo, Anthony Stephen, Timilehin Adeniyi, and Olayiwola Ayomide Abdulmalik. Justice Akanbi sentenced Muhammed, Mustapha, Odunayo, and Stephen, while Justice Yusuf dealt with Adeniyi and Abdulmalik on Monday, October 14, 2024.
During the proceedings, prosecution counsels Andrew Akoja and Victoria Igodo presented extrajudicial statements, recovered items, and proceeds from the fraudulent activities, all of which were admitted as evidence.
For instance, Ismail Mustapha was charged with cheating by impersonation, specifically pretending to be “Myre Roddy” on TikTok and defrauding an individual of $500 via Apple gift cards. The defendants all pleaded guilty to their respective charges.
Consequently, Justice Akanbi sentenced Idris Muhammed to two years in prison with an option for a ₦100,000 fine, alongside the forfeiture of his iPhone 13 and $300 in restitution to the Federal Government. Ismail Mustapha received a one-year sentence with a ₦100,000 option, forfeiting his iPhone 11 Pro Max and $300.
Oyekola Odunayo was sentenced to one year in prison on one count with a ₦100,000 option, two years on another count with a ₦200,000 option, and two weeks of community service, along with the forfeiture of $300 and ₦34,900. Anthony Stephen received a one-year sentence with a ₦50,000 option and forfeited his iPhone 12 and $25.
Similarly, Justice Yusuf sentenced Timilehin Adeniyi and Olayiwola Abdulmalik to six months in prison, each with a ₦200,000 option.
