Ifoh Warns Against Appeals From Obi and Otti On Court Ruling Upholding Abure As Labour Party ChairmanThe Labour Party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, has expressed that it would be regrettable for former presidential candidate Peter Obi and Governor Alex Otti to challenge the court ruling affirming Julius Abure as the party’s National Chairman. Ifoh shared his views during an interview published by Punch on Thursday.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

He emphasized that since Obi and Otti were not parties to the original suit, any attempt to appeal the ruling would appear as an attempt to seize power. A Federal High Court in Abuja, led by Justice Emeka Nwite, recently ruled that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) must recognize Abure as the legitimate Chairman of the Labour Party.

In his ruling last Tuesday, Justice Nwite upheld the leadership of Abure’s faction and validated the March 2024 Nnewi convention, directing INEC to acknowledge this leadership. The faction aligned with Peter Obi has rejected the court’s decision and plans to appeal.

Ifoh urged Obi and his supporters to abandon such plans and respect Abure’s leadership for the party’s sake. He pointed out that Abure’s tenure lasts until 2028, stating, “It would be unfortunate if they pursue that route, as you can’t appeal a judgment in which you’re not a party. The Caretaker Committee is not recognized under the Labour Party’s constitution or Nigerian electoral law, and thus lacks standing in this matter.”

He continued, “The suit was solely between the Labour Party and INEC, meaning they cannot contest a ruling they weren’t involved in. If they wish to challenge the situation, they would need to file a new suit, but their current designation isn’t acknowledged by law or the party’s constitution.”

Ifoh also noted that the Labour Party has faced crises in the past but has resolved them in the party’s interest. He questioned the motivation behind an appeal, asserting, “If the court has confirmed the party’s recognition, what justification is there for an appeal? It suggests a desire to grab power rather than support the party’s growth. If they oppose the current leadership, they must wait for the term to expire in four years. As it stands, Abure’s leadership will remain in place until 2028, as dictated by law.
