On Sunday morning, Alhaji Mohammed Baba-Okanla, Chairman of the Kwara State Independent Electoral Commission (KWASIEC), announced that the APC secured victory in both the chairmanship and councillorship elections across all 16 local government areas and 193 wards in the state.
While the APC celebrated the outcome, PDP members took to the streets, protesting outside the KWASIEC office in Ilorin, accusing the commission of bias. The protesters carried placards with messages such as “Kwara people say no to bad governance by APC,” “KWASIEC falsified election results for APC,” and “KWASIEC robbed PDP in Kwara LG elections.”
Leading the protest, former commissioner Hajia Saratu Adebayo alleged that KWASIEC had manipulated the results to favor the APC. She claimed, “The PDP won the chairmanship elections in all 16 local governments, but KWASIEC, in collaboration with the state government and APC, altered the results and handed them to the ruling party.”
Despite the protests, the APC expressed gratitude to the people of Kwara for their support and peaceful conduct during the election. In a statement signed by its chairman, Prince Sunday Fagbemi, the APC thanked voters for the large turnout and overwhelming support for its candidates.
The APC further commended KWASIEC for managing the electoral process, praising the commission for addressing issues like the late arrival of materials in some areas. The statement also criticized the PDP, accusing the opposition of attempting to disrupt the elections, particularly in Offa, where the APC claimed PDP supporters tried to undermine the process after their legal efforts to stop the election failed.
The APC concluded by thanking voters for standing by the party and ensuring a smooth election.
