Kwara Poly Community Calls For Justice After Student Allegedly Killed By Police

The management and students of Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, are calling for justice following the death of 21-year-old student Abdulqoyyum Bamidele, who was allegedly killed by police in Ilorin. On Thursday, students, led by the Students’ Union President Olalekan Isola and Abdulwahab Habeebullahi Arewa, the National President of the National Association of Kwara State Students, marched to the state police command headquarters to demand answers.
A statement from the students’ union indicated that they had a productive meeting with police authorities, which lasted over three hours. The discussions aimed to ensure a thorough investigation into the incident. According to reports, Abdulqoyyum was reportedly chased by a police officer to the Fate area of Ilorin, where he was found with a severe arm wound. He was taken to Kwara State General Hospital but succumbed to his injuries the following morning and was buried that day according to Islamic rites.
The Rector of Kwara Polytechnic, Engr Abdul Jimoh Muhammed, expressed sorrow over the student’s death. A statement from the institution’s spokesperson, Mrs. Halimat Garba, revealed that the incident occurred on September 4, 2024, around GRA in Ilorin. She noted that while details surrounding the student’s death remain unclear, the institution is committed to ensuring justice based on the final investigation reports.
DSP Ejire Adeyemi Toun, spokesperson for the state police command, confirmed that an investigation is underway and promised that the findings will be made public once complete.
