Dr. Amina El-Imam, the state Commissioner for Health, confirmed the deaths at a press conference on August 6, 2024. The victims reportedly consumed Amala suspected to be contaminated. Dr. El-Imam revealed that one death was due to Gastroenteritis.

The health team visited the community after reports of multiple fatalities in the family following the consumption of Lafun-Amala, made from cassava flour. The 70-year-old woman who initially fell ill and died was followed by her son and grandchildren, who also consumed the same food. They were taken to the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, where they passed away.

Dr. El-Imam suggested that the Lafun-Amala might have caused the deaths, noting that individuals who consumed yam flour alone did not experience adverse effects. The mixture of Lafun and Amala, however, led to illness and fatalities.

Several other patients are recovering in hospitals, and intensive treatment is underway. The community’s poor personal and environmental hygiene may have contributed to the outbreak.

The case is suspected to involve chemical food poisoning, possibly due to inadequately processed cassava used in the Lafun. Additionally, an initial test for Cholera turned out to be Gastroenteritis, with one death recorded in Osin Gada, Ilorin West Local Government Area.

The disease primarily affected children, causing vomiting and diarrhea. Immediate treatment was provided to all affected patients to control the symptoms and promote recovery. Efforts are being made to improve water quality and hygiene in the area to prevent further cases.
