In a statement released on Tuesday in Abuja, Labour Party National Publicity Secretary Obiora Ifoh quoted Amos, who stated that the Trade Unions Act prohibits the NLC from meddling in the political activities of any political party.
Ifoh emphasized that the NLC should avoid involving itself in the Labour Party’s operations. This follows a letter sent to the registrar by LP National Chairman Julius Abure on July 10, 2024. The letter addressed the NLC’s claims over the Labour Party’s leadership and proprietary rights, asserting that the NLC does not own the party.
Amos referred to Section 15 (1) (2) (3) of the Trade Unions Act ‘Cap T14 & TI5 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004, which stipulates that the NLC is prohibited from engaging in or supporting political parties or candidates. The act explicitly states that the NLC must not use its members’ funds for political purposes or cover expenses for political candidates.
Ifoh urged the NLC leadership to comply with these legal provisions and avoid interference with the Labour Party and other political entities.
