Lady Sparks Reactions After Borrowing ₦450k for Aso-Ebi, Then Facing Rent Crisis
A woman has reportedly found herself in financial difficulty after borrowing ₦450,000 to purchase aso-ebi for a wedding she was not even planning to attend.
According to Bush Radio Academy, the incident was narrated by the woman’s cousin, who said he initially thought she was joking when she revealed that she had taken a loan to buy the fabric.
The woman reportedly explained that she felt compelled to purchase the aso-ebi because she was worried about how her friends and members of her social circle would perceive her if she failed to participate in the fashion trend surrounding the wedding.
She was quoted as saying, “If I don’t buy it, people will ask questions. My friends will think I’ve changed.”
Concerned about the decision, her cousin reportedly questioned how she intended to settle her rent after spending such a significant amount on the outfit. However, she allegedly dismissed his concerns, insisting that he did not understand the social pressure involved.
“Abeg, leave that one. You don’t understand how these things work,” she reportedly told him.
Three weeks later, the woman allegedly contacted her cousin again after her landlord gave her seven days to complete her outstanding rent payment. By then, she reportedly had only ₦80,000 left.
When her cousin reminded her about the ₦450,000 she had borrowed for the aso-ebi, she reportedly acknowledged that the decision could appear unwise in hindsight but maintained that buying the fabric had seemed important at the time.
“I know it sounds stupid, but if I had shown up without the aso-ebi, everybody would have noticed,” she reportedly said.
Reflecting on the situation, the narrator suggested that the woman’s decision may have been driven less by a desire to impress strangers and more by the fear of appearing financially different or unstable among people who knew her.
The experience has since raised broader questions about social pressure, financial priorities and the lengths people may go to maintain appearances, particularly when doing so involves spending money they cannot comfortably afford.
