Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road Phase 1 Expected To Be Ready By 2025, Umahi Assures

Engr. David Umahi, the Minister of Works, has announced that the first phase of the Lagos-Calabar super highway is scheduled to be commissioned by May 2025. He made this disclosure during a meeting with contractors at the Ministry’s headquarters in Mabushi, Abuja. Addressing concerns about project cost variations, Umahi emphasized the Ministry’s commitment to minimizing such discrepancies. He highlighted that the pricing for materials like concrete and asphalt, pegged at N1,700 per US dollar, remains stable without variations. Regarding the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, Umahi confirmed the project’s continuity, noting a reduction to six lanes and steady progress.

Umahi also mentioned the rerouting of sections to accommodate existing infrastructure like MTN and African cables, ensuring minimal disruption to communities. He underscored the completion of over 4 kilometers of concrete roads and highlighted significant progress in compensating affected parties, totaling nearly N10 billion.

Discussing the 2024 budget, Umahi noted that over 90% of the new projects are constituency initiatives of the National Assembly, despite limited funding allocations. He characterized the budget as both a palliative measure and a critical support system, particularly for emergency projects, citing the completion of 80% of 330 such projects, including bridges.

Additionally, Umahi reported that the Federal Executive Council has prioritized projects with the highest societal impact, proposing to defer funding for less critical endeavors.
