The assembly has called upon the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to take necessary actions to restore peace within the esteemed legislative chamber.
In addition to condemning the perceived encroachment of the executive branch into the legislative affairs of Rivers State, the House emphasized that the constitution unequivocally upholds the autonomy of the legislature.
The assembly members also urged the Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, to abide by constitutional principles and refrain from interfering in the legislative processes, urging the Senate and House of Representatives to address the ongoing crisis.
Addressing the issue as a “Matter of Urgent Public Importance,” Hon. Desmond Elliot, who represents Surulere 1, stressed that the attack directly undermined the integrity of the legislative body, a fundamental pillar of democracy.
Furthermore, he questioned the legitimacy of the selection of a new speaker for the Rivers State House of Assembly and insisted that due process should be strictly followed.
